VALENCIA: A CITY GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

In the last few years Valencia has experienced a renaissance that has made the city popular with both tourists and business people looking to take advantage of the great new opportunities that have arisen. In addition to its historical charm and ancient artistic treasures  the city can now boast new attractions such as Santiago Calatrava’s Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (City of Arts and Sciences), the hosting of the 32nd and 33rd Americas Cup, the Palau de la Música (City Concert Hall), the Palau de les Arts (opera house), the IVAM (Valencia Institute of Modern Art) and the Museo de Bellas Artes (Museum of Fine Art), among others, not forgetting of course, the beautiful countryside and the marvellous beaches.

Valencia has become a city of contrasts, a city where the visitor can find a combination of fascinating history and the most modern cultural movements. Its unstoppable urban growth is being complimented by an infrastructure that provides ideal locations for cultural and sporting events, trade fairs and business activities. If to all this we add an almost perfect climate, a superb gastronomic tradition and excellent hotel facilities it is easy to see why Valencia is such an inviting destination for those wishing to take a break, those seeking personal enrichment or for enterprising business people.

The Architectural Vanguard

Valencia has witnessed an urban development that has included projects that have generated architectural interest at a national and international level, some examples are; Santiago Calatrava’s Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (City of Arts and Sciences), Norman Foster’s Palacio de Congresos (Conference Centre), Jean Nouvel’s city sea front for the 32nd Americas Cup, the IVAM (Valencia Institute of Modern Art) by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nichizawa and  José María de Paredes’ design for the Palau de la Música (City Concert Hall).

But the city’s development has not only been about the construction of new focal points; it has also been about making the best use of all resources - as much the existing arts centres, museums and monuments as the new buildings – for cultural events, conferences and business activities and in this way increasing the options and the possibilities that the city has to offer.

Valencia: Greener than Ever

Valencia is not only a city of culture but also a city with parks, gardens and recreational areas. The most recent of these is the  Parque de Cabecera and in its 334,000 square meters we can find the new Zoo and  fun-fair. The Jardín del Túria is set in the dried-out river bed of the Turia and has 10 kilometres of gardens with areas for sports.

In terms of natural recreational areas we must mention Albufera de Valencia, which was incorporated in the List of Wet Zones of International Importance by the Ramsar Conference in 1990 and declared an Area of Special Protection for Birds and Wildlife by European directive in 1994, just next to Albufera we can see the beautiful pastureland of Saler. Finally, mention must be made of the Bioparc, a new concept of zoo-inmersion, opened in February 2008.

Events

Valencia host the 32nd Americas Cup in 2007 and the 33rd edition in 2010. Other important sports are: motorcycling, with the World Championship in the Ricardo Tormo circuit at Cheste; tennis, with the Valencia Open 500 Championship in November, the Formula 1 Grand Prix in June, the Global Champions Tour of hourses in May.
